Bennington Museum chairs we are using as prototypes
My son-in-law Pete, who rents the other end of my shop, has joined me in building a set of 26 chairs for a friend who last fall commissioned a set of seven 40” square and two 11’ long pedestal tables. They’re all going into a large 18th century barn from Rumney NH that he has resurrected nearby as a center for several local organic farms to base their retailing in.
The design of the chair will be a blend of 2 nice eighteenth century chairs we found in the Bennington Museum in southern Vermont. The originals were painted, but we are making ours out of cherry, the same wood we used for the tables, and slightly taller to accommodate 21st century people.
It’s a logistical challenge keeping track of parts (something like 468, if my math serves me right), so for now we are just doing the parts for the backs. At this point we have done the back legs and cross-pieces, and tomorrow we will start the crest rails at the top. After that comes the splat, the vase-shaped piece in the center of the back.
